International Programs

The International Programs Unit of the School initiates, plans and implements projects aimed at creating partnership of Jewish educators in development of curricula, materials and methodology of Jewish Peoplehood education. The following are the first projects of the Unit:

The Task Force on Jewish Peoplehood Education
The Global Task Force of Jewish Peoplehood Education, established with the support of UJA-Federation New York, brings together over thirty leading practitioners in formal, informal and adult Jewish education from around the world in order construct a platform for conceptualizing, strategizing, and educating for Jewish Peoplehood. The goal of the Task Force is to ensure that Jewish Peoplehood becomes an integral part of Jewish education worldwide. The first conference of the Task Force took place in Nachsholim, Israel in May 2008.  The second conference of the Task Force took place in May 2009 in New York City.

My Family Story
This year, for the first time, Beit Hatfutsot has created an accompanying curricular unit to support teachers and students in the process of preparing projects for the My Family Story International Competition. This curriculum contains a program and plan of action for assisting students in this exciting journey, with suggested activities, accompanying texts and material, and some useful links. The curriculum, written by two experienced educators on the SJPS staff, Dr. Cecilia Waismann and Dr. Elana Maryles Sztokman, has tremendous potential in reaching Jewish students far and wide. The curriculum aims to encourage students to investigate their personal family histories, stimulating and reinforcing family ties, strengthen students' identity, convey an appreciation and understanding of the connection between different individual histories, Jewish people's history and global events, and ultimately instill in students a sense of connection, belonging and commitment to the Jewish people.

The Educational Kit: Israel – the Vision and the Venture of the Jewish People
SJPS celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Jewish state by spreading the message of its remarkable existence in terms of Jewish Peoplehood.  The Vision and the Venture of the Jewish People toolkit, which is neither a typical curriculum, nor a standard program but rather a boxed collection of materials, sources, and ideas for engaging students in the intriguing account of Jewish partnership and cooperation, promotes the narrative of Israel as the product of mammoth, complex international cooperation between Jewish communities everywhere. As a special extra, the tool-kit also contains a very special 7-minute video that tells the story in a current language and format that even the youngest of viewers find engaging, as well as a disk, a facilitator’s guide book, project cards, and access to the interactive website  www.israventure.com, developed in partnership with the Center for Educational Technology (CET), with a wide selection of materials available for easy download.

Peoplehood Papers
The Peoplehood Papers is a collection of essays on subjects of thinking about and creating new understandings and action plans around Jewish peoplehood. Created in collaboration between the School for Jewish Peoplehood Studies, KolDor and The United Jewish Communities, The Peoplehood Papers features articles from a diverse group of Jewish leaders and thinkers and covers philosophical aspects of Jewish Peoplehood as well as practical implications for Jewish organizations, schools and communities.
